When Ben told me on Thursday night that he’d made flight bookings as a surprise for us to take a weekend trip to Toronto to see JR I couldn’t contain my excitement and after thanking him in the best possible way, I immediately dragged our bags from the closet and started packing, much to Ben’s amusement.

Friday night couldn’t come soon enough for me and it seemed that no sooner were we in the air than the lights of Toronto were below us as we made our descent. The steady fall of snow as we waited for a taxi did nothing to dampen my spirits and I couldn’t contain my impatience as the taxi crawled along the snow covered streets towards Mel and Lindsay’s house.

"Michael calm down." Ben said for the fifth time. "You yelling at cars to get out of the way and telling the snow to stop falling is not going to make us get their any faster."

I glared at him because he was always so damn logical and of course right.

"I know but it makes me feel better!" I snapped in response, trying to ignore the smile on his face but failing miserably. His smile could make me melt, much like I wanted the snow to do at this moment, so I dropped a quick kiss on his lips and rested my head against his shoulder as we continued our slow journey.

After what seemed like forever we finally pulled up in front of the girl’s house. Lights blazed from every room and I could almost feel the warmth that I knew would greet us when we opened the door.

I stamped my feet impatiently as Ben paid the driver and pulled our cases from the trunk. I grabbed mine from him and almost ran up the path, knocking loudly on the door, ignoring Ben’s laughter as he followed me at a much more sedate pace.

The door finally opened and Mel stood there, a welcoming smile on her face, but I looked past her at the small figure running towards me, a huge smile on her face and her arms out-stretched.

"Daddddddddddddddddddy…………."

I scooped her into my arms, squeezing her tightly and I knew that no matter how long it took to get here, it was worth every second of it for this one moment.
